In the timing belt drive system, the driving pulley refers to the wheel that can transmit power, that is, the pulley connected to the motor is the driving pulley, and the pulley connected to the timing belt and pulled by the belt is the driven pulley (also called the passive pulley). The large pulley is used as the driving pulley for acceleration, and the small pulley is used as the driving pulley for deceleration. The motor speed used in normal use is generally high, and the speed does not need to be very high, so the purpose of using a small pulley is to slightly reduce the speed.

The commonly used motors are 2-pole, 4-pole and 6-pole, and the speed is relatively high. If you want to reduce the motor speed, you need to increase the number of motors, but this will cause the weight and volume of the motor to increase accordingly. Choosing a small pulley as the driving pulley can achieve a deceleration effect without increasing the number of motor stages, thus avoiding the increase in motor weight and volume.


In addition, belt drive has the function of preventing overload. During the motor startup process, especially in the startup of high-power motors, belt drive can effectively prevent overload problems during the startup process. Considering the size of the wrap angle, using a small pulley as the driving pulley is conducive to increasing the wrap angle and improving the stability and carrying capacity of the belt drive.
